AgIndex Weekly: Issue #2, This week on the farm

Today's farm prices, jobs and gear in five minutes. Week ending Friday 16 October 2026.

G'day. This week we've switched the newsletter to what most of you told us you actually want: the numbers. Here's where prices sat when we put this together.

Fuel

  • Diesel: the cheapest WA diesel today was 249.3c/L (Ascot, FuelWatch WA, 16 Oct). Prices in the Wheatbelt run higher, so check your town on the [fuel prices page](https://agindex.com.au/fuel.html).
  • Running machinery off-road? You're probably entitled to the fuel tax credit. Our new [fuel tax credit guide](https://agindex.com.au/guides/fuel-tax-credit-for-farmers.html) explains how it works.

Port grain (ABARES, week to 14 Oct)

  • APW wheat: A$432/t (steady)
  • ASW wheat: A$423/t (steady)
  • Canola: A$805/t (down A$2)
  • Feed barley: A$372/t (down A$2)
  • Sorghum: A$461/t (up A$5)

These are port prices, not what lands in your bank account. Take off freight and handling to get your farmgate price. [How port grain prices work](https://agindex.com.au/guides/how-port-grain-prices-work.html).

Sugar

  • World raw sugar: A$575/t for September, up from A$535/t in August (World Bank, converted at RBA rates).

Livestock (MLA, 15 Oct)

  • EYCI: 971c/kg cwt, up from 969c the day before
  • Trade lamb: 1,154c/kg cwt, up from 1,146c
  • Heavy lamb: 1,120c/kg cwt, steady
  • Mutton: 833c/kg cwt, steady
  • Heavy steer: 479c/kg lwt, up from 473c

New to the indicators? [Reading the EYCI and lamb indicators](https://agindex.com.au/guides/reading-eyci-and-lamb-indicators.html).

Dairy

  • ABARES forecasts an average farmgate milk price of 76.1c/L for 2026–27, up from 73.5c/L in 2025–26 (ABARES Agricultural Commodities, September 2026).

Fertiliser

  • Urea: the last published Australian farmgate list was A$900/t (WA depot, March 2026). The world urea price was A$584/t in September (World Bank, in Aussie dollars). We're looking for a newer farmgate list we're allowed to publish. [Fertiliser timing and pricing basics](https://agindex.com.au/guides/fertiliser-timing-and-pricing.html).

Jobs and gear

Harvest is coming. If you need a header driver, chaser bin operator or farm hand, [post a job free](https://agindex.com.au/jobs/post.html). Selling a tractor, header, sprayer or seeder? [List it free](https://agindex.com.au/used/list.html). Until our own listings fill up, both pages link to the main Australian job boards and machinery sites.
